Beauty School

Integrated Media Arts Department, HARTFORD Art School ~ Koopman Distinguished Chair in the visual Arts ~ Joseloff Gallery, University of Hartford

FEBRUARY 27 - March 27 2020

As part of being appointed by the Integrated Media Arts Department at Hartford Art School to the Georgette and Richard Koopman Distinguished Chair in the Visual Arts at the University of Hartford for the spring of 2020, this exhibition accompanies a seven part series of lectures and salons titled Beauty School. The central argument of Beauty School is that beauty (in all its problematics and complexities) is the force that carries a work of art beyond the specifics of its historical and social contexts. In this sense, beauty is a strategy. It can also be tactical.

The lectures and salons of Beauty School examine the history, philosophy, politics and social structures of the idea of beauty while the exhibition component is comprised of nine small images that - individually and together - represent the risks that come with arguing for beauty.

Images I produced alongside students for Beauty School, are here.
