Photographs come out of nowhere. Surviving images are those that, day and years after the moment has passed, still contain some degree of the direct and instantaneous experience that occasioned pressing their appearance.

Most images do not accomplish this. Many are composed. One must keep from being seduced by style.  Images must not succumb to symbol and metaphor - as much as possible - in order to keep them from being understood as any kind of expression. Expression is lethal.
